Driving the renewables revolution from the sea
Ocean Energy is a central pillar of INESCTEC.OCEAN’s research agenda. In the context of Europe’s green transition and zero-carbon strategies, harnessing the ocean’s vast energy potential is essential for a resilient and sustainable future.
Our work spans the development of offshore renewables, energy integration systems, and next-generation solutions for coastal and deep-sea energy infrastructure.
Our Approach
We develop and test solutions that support the large-scale deployment of offshore wind, wave, and solar technologies.
Our research also explores the integration of ocean energy into smart grids and “green ports,” contributing to climate mitigation and energy resilience. With a strategic location along the Atlantic coast, INESCTEC.OCEAN is ideally placed to lead ocean energy development in Western Europe.
Strategic Goals
Development and support of offshore renewable energy technologies, including energy harvesting and storage systems
Integration of offshore renewables into national and regional energy grids
Research on floating and underwater compact substations
Use of offshore wind farms for grid restoration (black-start capabilities)
Assessment of hydrogen production and storage combined with ocean energy systems
Energy management strategies for hybrid offshore energy parks
Development of tools and models for optimal site selection of single- and multi-source energy farms (wind, wave, photovoltaic)
Development of control strategies for multi-technology farms and high-voltage direct current systems
Optimisation of offshore energy infrastructure layouts through multi-physics and multi-technology modelling

Our Impact
By addressing both technological challenges and strategic deployment opportunities, INESCTEC.OCEAN supports the large-scale adoption of ocean energy as a reliable and sustainable power source.
Our work contributes directly to national energy goals and the European Union’s long-term vision for a carbon-neutral energy system.
