Redefining Portugal’s ocean legacy through research and innovation

INESCTEC.OCEAN is the first Portuguese Centre of Excellence fully dedicated to Ocean Research and Engineering. It was established to address global marine challenges through cutting-edge science, technology, and collaboration.

Rooted in Portugal’s historical connection to the sea, the Centre aims to build a forward-looking future where the ocean becomes a cornerstone of climate resilience, economic development, and sustainable solutions for a green future,

What We Do

We operate at the intersection of research, innovation, and industry. Our activities are focused on four scientific domains: Ocean Energy, Marine Robotics, Marine Structures, and Ocean Data. These pillars are vital for advancing the Blue Economy and for unlocking new ocean-based opportunities in Europe and beyond.

INESCTEC.OCEAN drives cooperation among science, business, policymakers, and society—ensuring that knowledge translates into direct, meaningful impact.

Vision

To lead globally in sustainable Ocean Research and Engineering, advancing climate resilience, economic growth, and biodiversity preservation, while responsibly using and protecting marine resources, in line with Europe’s sustainability agenda.

Mission

To reinforce EU competitiveness through sustainable ocean research and innovation, addressing global challenges in marine ecosystems, climate resilience, and the Blue Economy.
